South Korean scientists create glowing dog - report

South Korean scientists said on Wednesday they have created a glowing dog using a cloning technique that could help find cures for human diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, Yonhap news agency reported.
A research team from Seoul National University (SNU) said the genetically modified female beagle, named Tegon and born in 2009, has been found to glow fluorescent green under ultraviolet light if given a doxycycline antibiotic, the report said.
The researchers, who completed a two-year test, said the ability to glow can be turned on or off by adding a drug to the dog's food.
"The creation of Tegon opens new horizons since the gene injected to make the dog glow can be substituted with genes that trigger fatal human diseases," the news agency quoted lead researcher Lee Byeong-chun as saying.
He said the dog was created using the somatic cell nuclear transfer technology that the university team used to make the world's first cloned dog, Snuppy, in 2005.
The scientist said that because there are 268 illnesses that humans and dogs have in common, creating dogs that artificially show such symptoms could aid treatment methods for diseases that afflict humans.
The latest discovery published in 'Genesis', an international journal, took four years of research with roughly 3.2 billion won ($3 million) spent to make the dog and conduct the necessary verification tests, Yonhap said.

It's Quite In The House

PlusOne slept over Memere & Pepere's last night. It was awfully quiet in the house.

And since he wasn't home, I had to share the bed with Lucky.

But I didn't have to share any of these luscious berries! For some reason, Lucky doesn't eat them. Mom has been sharing with the people at work and Memere & Pepere. The general consensus is that they melt in your mouth and are "so darn good". Memere said she thought she'd died and gone to heaven.

Enough with the sharing mom! They're MY berries. Just like everything else in the house. MINE! MINE! MINE!

Any questions?

Tattle Tale Tuesday

Thursday PlusOne brought Lucky and I to see Memere and Pepere.

This is what I looked like after I ate 3/4 of a bag of Missy's (Memere's woofie) special treats ordered directly from the vet's office. They were in the cabinet under the sink and behind the garbage can. There were no locks on the cabinet (Missy does not get into the cabinets) and the only reason they were behind the garbage can is because Memere was not ready to start giving them out to Missy.

Mom's co-workers say that I need a new job. A job that utilizes my special skills. Mom has no clue what kind of job I could do and not get into trouble. Memere and Pepere say I am a pill. I say that mom better buy Memere some more treats. What do you think?

July 25, 2011

Supposedly it is only going to get up to 81 degrees today, with a chance of thunderstorms. It was actually in the low 60's last night. It was beautiful, after all the awful hot hot hot heat heat heat and humidity humidity humidity. My best friend this weekend was the a/c and I don't think anyone can blame me. I really don't want a repeat of that any time soon!

Camp Sunflower Weekend

We're not actually GOING to the Camp Sunflower Weekend (nod, nod, wink, wink).

Where there will be a great swimming hole scouted out by our fabulous hostesses, Wilma and Brigitte.

And lots of other extravaganzas that I can't possibly share with you.

But as you can see by how excited Lucky is, it will be a wonderful time. Not that we're going.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Well, mom's computer is almost all better. The only thing she can't find is her Email Address Book. What a pain is that! Doesn't matter to Lucky and me, though, because we had laps to lie in and got lots of cuddling. Enjoy your day!

Sunny Saturday

Lucky and I have been relaxing in the sun the last few days. We are going to do the same today while mom finishes rebuilding her computer, and re-installing everything! Mom didn't realize she had so many photos of us, lol. What can I say, we're photogenic!

Famous Friday

Did you know that I am famous? Well, I am! I have had a cookie named after me. See, look at the photo.

It is the Roxy Dragon Pebbles Counter Surfing Cookie. Here is the comment that was left for mom: And we are so thankful for that adventurous streak!!! So much so, that the girls and I from Pugs in the Kitchen named a cookie after you for the bakery!!! The recipe called it a counter surfer cookie and you were the first Puggy I thought of!!! So we renamed it after you and on the ingredient plaque there is a little picture of you on the counter!! (See the photo?)

Isn't that SOOOOO cool! Mom thinks that is so cool. She smiled a lot. She thinks it is especially nice and generous because Jes, the woman who named the cookie for me, just lost her beloved Lilo and mom knows how hard it is to think about others when you are grieving so deeply.

So if you want Pug treats or to say hi to Jes, just click on those two links. Those treats look awfully good. I am going to have to order my cookies and give a review of them (I am positive that they will be out of this world good.)

Thankful Thursday

I know I have said it before, but I will say it again. I am glad my mom loves me so much and forgives me for being on the table when she gets home from work. (I'm not a bad dog, I'm ADVENTUROUS!)

Froot Bat Friday

Doods! We're going to have to owe you some better froot bats.  Mine are nervous. See, EG took a walkabout the other day.  For some reason, the front door didn't latch and he ranned outside. When Mom came home after work, she was down to only two Furry Kids, which really freaked her out. I'll let him fill you in on Mancat Monday. Let's just say, he's home, he's safe, he's grounded, and he's in a bad mood. And when he's in a bad mood, he always goes for the froot bats. He claims that their deliciousness cheers him up, but whatever. I'm sorry, doods.  This is all I've got right now. These froot bats can't even relax. Not even for treats.

Here's my PSA for the week:  Doods!  Stay home!
And have a great weekend!

He's Dead, Jim

So, mom thinks her computer is toast. It kept turning off whenever it wanted and then would turn on whenever it wanted. The last time it turned on mom's screen themes were gone and it was welcoming her to Windows XP. It's a good thing she knows how to rebuild it (we can rebuild him. We have the technology.) And yes, mom is quoting famous TV in this post. If you know what she's talking about, post it in the comments. Maybe it will make her smile. I know I sure am trying my hardest.

Easy Like Sunday Morning - NOT

That is, if mom's computer decides to behave. Last night mom turned it on, touched the mouse and poof! It turned itself off. It's something to do with the USB ports, but mom wasn't interested in figuring it out last night. She just backed it up and left it for today. Pray it behaves! And that mom can figure it out.

World Domination

I was going to begin my plans for world domination but decided that lying in the sun is more pleasant, so I am going to turn the plans over to my best general. General PlusOne! Here are his troops.

I think with that fierce red dragon PlusOne should be able to conquer the world. Don't you?

Berry Thursday

Look at mom's huge raspberries! Mom is certainly enjoying them.

So am I. I am eating all the ones I can reach, much to mom's dismay. She keeps yelling at me to get out of them, but mom, I tell her, they're yummy!

Look at all the boysenberries. They will be ripe in a few more weeks, and mom is excited about how many are blooming. Can you say double yummy?

Almost Wordless Wednesday from an Internet Cafe

The photos are from home, not from the cafe!

I've named this next guy "Mo", short for "Mohawk". He's been a regular for the past two years.

I have high hopes that I'll be back to visiting blogs from home sometime soon!

July 6, 2011

PlusOne is spending the night with Grandpa and Nana, so I have to share the bed with Lucky. Which isn't so bad, except that she takes MY spot next to mom or dad. I muscle her out of it and no, I DON'T feel guilty about it either. She understands these things. (She better, after seven and a half years!)

PS Raise your paw if your parental unit does not want to go to work today.

6.8 billion pounds: The total production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2010, making the Lone Star State the largest producer of steaks and burgers in the country, or about one-sixth of the nation's production. Runner-up states are Nebraska (4.6 billion pounds) and Kansas (4.1 billion pounds).

6: The number of states in which the value of broiler chicken production was $1 billion or greater between December 2009 and November 2010. (Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.)

Over 1 in 3: Odds that your side dish of baked beans originated from North Dakota, which produced 36 percent of all the nation's dry, edible beans in 2010.

Have a great Fourth!

Vet Results And Ribs

When mom put the leash on yesterday morning, I thought we were going someplace FUN! The VET was not FUN! I had blood stolen, got a needle stuck in me and then my ears were checked out. I have an infection in them, so mom has to give me drops twice a day.

I am perfect, however (that should come as no surprise to any of you) in my weight. At 18.4 lbs, I have a lovely waistline and was complimented by no less than FOUR of the staff, including Dr. Loves Me A WHOLE Lot (who wanted to kidnap me from mom when I was very young).

Mom made ribs today, and DIDN'T SHARE! Here they are.

Dad pretty much devoured an entire rack all by himself. It's not really surprising when you figure the meat was falling off the bone tender. Mom and dad made a whole lot of "yummy" sounds, but neither one of them chose to share. I think I shall have to think of a suitable punishment for that.

VET Visit

Shhhh, I am hiding from mom, so she can't take me to the VET! Don't tell her where I am.

Finally Friday!!!

We've had some gorgeous weather lately, and we are looking forward to mom coming home early and staying home until Tuesday. Yippie!!

Mom's Secret Identify

You know that my mom is many things, mom, martial artist, blogger, worker-bee, but did you know that mom has another, secret identity? My mom is a "Personal Shopper" for people like Auntie and Blondie.

Here's the story. Blondie is going to a black tie wedding and needed a fancy dress. Mom to the rescue. Off to the mall (mom got there before Blondie) and by the time Blondie got there mom had several choices, including the winner; a black and aqua beaded jacket and camisole style blouse with harem style black pants.

Then they went off to by work clothes. Well, mom was batting 1000 at this as well. (Mom made Auntie buy a blouse that Auntie described as a "tablecloth" (it's plaid) and whenever Auntie wears it she gets compliments.) Several hundred dollars later and Blondie is set for the rest of the summer and mom is ready for bed. Snuggle time!!!!
